Divvy Expense Management: A Six-Month Review
At our company, we were looking for an expense management platform that was easy to set up, straightforward to use on a day-to-day basis, and preferably at no monthly cost. We settled on Divvy.
We’re about six months into our time with Divvy, which is a good milestone to write a review.
Features
- No monthly cost
- Physical and virtual cards
- Budgets that can be allocated to people, departments, and specific physical or virtual cards
- Looks easy to use
What’s Good?
- They offer virtual cards, which are more convenient than getting everyone physical cards.
- The physical cards are nicely designed.
- Customer support is responsive. Which is good, because you’ll be contacting them a lot.
What’s bad?
Statement payments take, on average, 5 to 10 business days to process. While your payment is processing, you can’t actually use your account, as it’s considered ‘inactive’.
An Ambiguous Decline
The mobile app is missing a lot of essential features, like unblocking a card. Why would you need this, you ask?
Your cards will be declined constantly for various reasons, like ‘Account Not Active’, despite regularly using your account. Or despite having sufficient funds in your budgets, your card will be declined for insufficient funds.
Frustrating User Interface
Both apps are frustratingly designed. Coming from a front-end design and development background, the interface decisions don’t make sense to me.
Let’s say you want to unblock a card. My first instinct is to go to Cards, then locate the card, then look for a button to unblock it.
But that’s not how Divvy does it.
In Divvy, you go to People, then locate the person that has the blocked card, then scroll down to the Cards section of their profile, and click Unblock Card.
Similarly, settings are not all in one place, but spread out to the far reaches of the app. It all feels haphazardly assembled, which it is.
There’s no cohesion in how to accomplish a task, so I invariably reach out to support to figure out how to do a thing, and then promptly forget because it makes no sense.
Conclusion
Would I recommend Divvy as an expense management platform to other business owners? No.
